The plot was the Clariant Chemicals works at Balkum Pada before Amazon Data Services India took its 54 acres from Ananta Landmarks, a Kalpataru Group entity, on 21 October 2022 for more than 1,800 crore rupees plus 130 crore in stamp duty. Clearing and excavation have run through 2026 against organised local objection: Thane Municipal Corporation's Tree Authority permitted 112 trees to be felled with a further 316 affected, and a protest in July 2026 drew more than a hundred people. Amazon says the site will take an industrial high-voltage transmission connection through a dedicated substation instead of the local distribution network, and that 115 of its 125 kilolitres of daily water will be treated sewage water used for landscaping. Filings record 422 MW of on-site generation capacity, 193 diesel sets and 4,500 air-conditioning units.
The Clariant Chemicals and Colorchem manufacturing works at Balkum Pada, Majiwada, in Thane West. Amazon bought the 54-acre plot in October 2022.
How will the site be powered?
By an industrial connection to the high-voltage transmission grid through a dedicated substation planned with the utility, bypassing the local distribution network. Site filings record 422 MW of generation capacity, 193 diesel generator sets and 1.5 lakh litres of diesel storage.
How much water will it use?
Amazon states 125 kilolitres a day, 10 of them potable for staff and 115 treated sewage water for landscaping, and says its Indian data centres use no water for cooling. Residents' groups cite a 12 MLD municipal allocation, a gap of roughly a hundredfold that remains unresolved.
Why is the project contested locally?
Tree felling under the 2024 Tree Authority permission, heat-island effects, noise, diesel emissions and water draw. Amazon published a dedicated facts page for the site in June 2026, which it does for very few buildings.
