What is a network carrier in colocation?
A network carrier (also called a service provider or transit provider) is an autonomous system (AS) operator with physical fiber present inside a data center. Customers colocating in a carrier-neutral facility can establish a dedicated cross-connect to any carrier in the building, then run dedicated internet access (DIA), IP transit, cloud on-ramps, MPLS / SD-WAN circuits, or private peering across that link.
Why carrier choice matters for colocation
- Redundancy. Multi-homing across two or more carriers in the same building avoids single-vendor outages without paying for an additional cross-connect to a remote facility.
- Cost. Larger carriers (Tier 1 backbones like Cogent, Lumen, Arelion, Telia, NTT) typically offer lower per-Mbps transit pricing thanks to settlement-free peering with the rest of the global routing table.
- Latency. Choosing a carrier with strong regional infrastructure (e.g. Hurricane Electric in North America, Arelion in Europe) can shave milliseconds off latency-sensitive workloads.
- Cloud on-ramps. Hyperscale providers like AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, and Google Cloud Interconnect are usually available as dedicated cross-connects in the same major colo facilities.
- Peering reach. Carriers connected to large internet exchanges (DE-CIX, AMS-IX, LINX, Equinix IX, etc.) get faster routes to content destinations that peer at those IXes.
