Metro: Navi Mumbai, IN Country: India Region: Asia

Amazon is developing a data centre at Balkum in Thane, Maharashtra, on the northern edge of the Mumbai metropolitan region, and describes it as one building rather than a campus. Power will not come off the local distribution network: the design takes an industrial connection to the high-voltage transmission grid, feeding a dedicated high-voltage substation on site. Water use is stated at 125 kilolitres a day, of which 115 kilolitres is treated sewage water supplied by the Thane Municipal Council for landscaping and irrigation, leaving a potable permit of 0.01 million litres a day for drinking water and washrooms. Amazon Data Services India registered the purchase of 10.6 acres at Palava in Thane in June 2026 for Rs 125.13 crore, against a site reported at 53 acres. The project has drawn sustained local objection through July and August 2026 over heat, noise and water, and Amazon has committed $1.2 million from its Right Now Climate Fund to a Thane Creek restoration project.
