Microsoft's Welsh project, CWL01, takes over the former Quinn Radiators plant on Celtic Way in Imperial Park, Newport - roughly a million sq ft of factory that Microsoft bought outright in March 2022 rather than leasing. Newport City Council granted planning permission unanimously on 5 July 2024 for two data centre buildings of 9 m, with 14 m flues serving standby generators, and Microsoft's published programme puts the construction start in the third quarter of 2026. The scheme is expected to create 120 jobs and carries a GBP 104,000 planning contribution toward walking and cycling routes on Celtic Way. Cooling intent, set out at the September 2023 public consultation, is outside air wherever conditions allow, with rainwater gathered on site to hold down mains use. The radiator works shut in 2019 with close to 300 jobs lost, and the wider Imperial Park site was an LG Electronics plant before that. Vantage's Newport campus adjoins it.
