Metro: Sydney, QLD, AU Country: Australia Region: Oceania

Eastern Creek, in the Blacktown local government area of western Sydney, holds one of the two data centres Amazon built for itself in New South Wales; the other stands at Smeaton Grange in the south-west. AWS chose both sites in October 2014, having run short of suitable third-party capacity in the Sydney market, and the Eastern Creek building carries the internal code SYD51. It is Amazon-owned and Amazon-run, while the company's Sydney interconnection points sit in other operators' buildings across the city.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sydney sites did AWS build for itself?
Eastern Creek and Smeaton Grange, both selected in October 2014. Eastern Creek is the one Amazon codes SYD51.
Why did AWS build in western Sydney instead of taking third-party capacity?
It ran short of suitable third-party capacity in Sydney in 2014 and moved to self-build on two sites, one in the city's west and one in the south-west. It still takes third-party capacity alongside them.
Which network operators are on site at Eastern Creek?
None. Amazon's Sydney interconnection points are hosted in other operators' buildings, among them Equinix SY3 and SY5, Global Switch SY6 and NEXTDC S2.
What else is being built around Eastern Creek?
Goodman Group has a large scheme at 10 Roberts Road, Eastern Creek: two three-storey buildings of about 99,310 m² on a 17-hectare site, quoted at up to 500 MVA. It is a separate project from Amazon's.
