Greece's largest lignite station stopped generating on 16 May 2026, when the final three units at Agios Dimitrios - near Ellispontos, in the Kozani regional unit of Western Macedonia - came off after more than forty years. PPC, the state power utility that owns the site, plans to rebuild it as a data centre campus: 300 MW in a first phase costing about EUR 1.2 billion, with room to grow towards 1 GW. Shareholders approved the plan in May 2026, construction was expected to begin within the same year, and full operation is targeted for the end of 2028. Power is to come from PPC's own regional generation - more than 3,000 MW of renewables plus 860 MW of storage - and connectivity from ΔΕΗ FiberGrid. Two hyperscale operators were in advanced negotiations in the spring of 2026, and about 2,000 jobs are projected for the development. PPC is separately converting its Ptolemaida 5 unit, in the same lignite basin, to gas.
