Generation comes first at Panhandle: Fermi America is assembling roughly 11 GW of power on 5,236 acres in Carson County - about 6 GW of natural gas from Siemens SGT-800 and F-class machines and GE 6Bs, 4.4 GW of nuclear from Westinghouse AP1000s and small modular reactors, and a further gigawatt through a behind-the-meter Xcel Energy interconnect with solar and storage. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality granted the site's air permit on 25 February 2026, the second-largest Clean Air permit issued in the country, after the company paused construction earlier that month to wait for it. The campus, at US Highway 60 and FM 2373 north-east of Amarillo, is planned in fifteen stages; Fermi reports more than $1.5 billion spent so far, about 2 GW of long-lead gas equipment in transit and 1.1 GW projected online during 2026. TensorWave signed the first binding lease on 10 August 2026, and a 2.6 GW power alliance with Hillcore Energy Capital followed the next day.
