About Echigo-IX

Echigo-IX is a regional exchange for Niigata Prefecture, established in September 2011 as a project of ENOG, the Echigo Network Operators' Group — it grew out of the regional operators' group rather than out of a carrier, and the operator frames it as a community and engineer-development effort as much as an interconnection one. Five Niigata providers began operating the fabric jointly at launch. A feature the operator advertises is that content delivery cache servers are housed inside the exchange facility, so traffic to major platforms terminates locally in Niigata rather than transiting to Tokyo. Peering runs on two IPv4 and two IPv6 LANs, and every connected peer supports IPv6.
