About Gig IX Ashburn
Gig-IX is a small not-for-profit exchange wholly owned by Free Range Cloud Hosting since late 2019, whose stated mission is to improve performance in under-served regions by standing up cheap open-access peering points. Price is its differentiator: 1G copper ports are given away free and fibre ports are sold at cost, typically for a one-time fee, on the reasoning that low port cost is what gets small networks to peer at all. The Ashburn instance is the only operational point of presence, in the IAD1 data centre colocated with Fork Systems, and participation is by copper cross-connect or from a virtual server inside the same facility. The operator states its points of presence are not interconnected with one another.
