About HIX Haiti

AIXP is Haiti's national exchange, operated by AHTIC, the Haitian information and communications technology association, which describes it as one of the first exchange points in the Caribbean. The operator dates the idea to discussions between 1999 and 2002, says awareness sharpened after Hurricane Noel in 2007, and puts the exchange into service in 2008 and 2009 with five founding members. The switch is a layer-2 fabric at Boutilliers, the hilltop telecom site above Port-au-Prince. Nine active member networks are published, among them Access Haiti and Digicel, and the operator gives exchanged traffic as 2 to 3 Gbps at peak against roughly 2 Gbps over 24 hours.
