About HIX
The Hawai'i Internet Exchange, HIX, serves Honolulu and the wider state. It was founded in 1995 and is managed and funded by the University of Hawai'i's information technology service. It began as a general community peering point and has since narrowed its remit to government, education and research traffic within the state. Participation is free and open to qualifying state institutions under a participation agreement the operator publishes. It peers with the DRFortress exchange so that the networks it carries can reach local provider networks, and the operator states that it offers routes from Hawai'i facilities to Hawai'i facilities only. The peering LAN is 205.166.205.0/24 with IPv6 added in May 2024.
