A wartime arms bunker holds earthDATAsafe: the SYENIT complex at Höhkogel 1 in Pötschach, a locality of Kapfenberg in Styria, cut for Böhler-Edelstahl in 1943 and 1944 as four working and four transport tunnels, 1,150 metres long and 4,650 m2 in area. DCCS fitted the data centre into it in eleven months and went live in November 2003. About 370 m2 of server floor is in use today, against roughly 4,000 m2 that could be built out inside the tunnels. Standby power is two diesel generators, 315 kW and 800 kW, on 18,000 litres of buried fuel, and fire protection is nitrogen suppression with particle detection the operator states will pick up a cable fault around three hours before it burns. Operation passed from DCCS to Kapsch BusinessCom on 1 July 2008; Kapsch became K-Businesscom, CANCOM SE acquired it in June 2023, and the site has traded as CANCOM Austria since January 2024. Four networks are present and no internet exchange.
