Power capacity
2.8 MW

Redhill, in the highlands at Limuru in Kiambu County, is a walled compound roughly 30 km from Nairobi where Safaricom is building a three-building data-centre campus on land it owns. Phase one of the first building was reported complete in March 2025, and phase two was scheduled for January 2026 at 2.8 MW of IT capacity; the two further buildings remain planned. Safaricom gives Kenyan data-sovereignty and data-security compliance as its reason for choosing the site. The cool highland air allows free cooling, on-site solar supplements the grid supply, and the cooling design is specified for the high-density racks that AWS, Microsoft and Oracle deploy. An innovation lab sits on the campus. The operator describes the build as meeting Tier III standards and cites 99.982% availability, neither of which is an Uptime Institute award.

Frequently asked questions

What stage has the Limuru campus reached?
Phase one of the first of three planned buildings was reported complete in March 2025, with phase two scheduled for January 2026 at 2.8 MW of IT capacity. The remaining two buildings are planned.
Which county is the Limuru campus in?
Kiambu County, in the Redhill area of Limuru, about 30 km from Nairobi rather than inside the city.
How is the Limuru campus cooled and powered?
Free cooling drawn from the highland climate, with on-site solar generation supplementing grid power. The cooling is specified to handle high-density racks to the standards AWS, Microsoft and Oracle set.
What does Safaricom's Tier III wording mean at Limuru?
It is a design standard the operator states for itself, quoted alongside a 99.982% availability figure. Neither is an Uptime Institute certification, and no Uptime award for Safaricom was located.
