Viridio wires its solar array straight to the load instead of buying offsets, and publishes PUE 1.10 and water usage of zero litres per kWh to make the point. Cooling is closed-loop and non-water-based, with hot and cold aisle containment and set points driven by an on-site weather station; the backup generator runs on propane rather than diesel, chosen for air quality. Every server takes two supplies through an automatic transfer switch into two of four UPS units, and virtualisation runs better than thirty to one. The company, founded in 1997 and formerly AISO.net, peers with Hurricane Electric in Los Angeles and Crown Castle in Orange County, deliberately at separate points so one metro outage cannot isolate the site. The company puts avoided emissions at 34,488 lbs of CO2 a year, and it was the first data centre to join the U.S. Green Building Council as a public member. Everything else is owned end to end: the building, the network, the hypervisor and an in-house control panel in place of cPanel.

Frequently asked questions

How is the site powered?
On-site solar wired directly to the building rather than accounted for as offsets, supplemented by further solar generated nearby on the same grid, with a propane backup generator chosen over diesel for air quality.
How efficient is the facility?
The operator publishes PUE 1.10 and water usage effectiveness of zero litres per kWh, achieved with closed-loop non-water-based cooling and weather-driven variable set points.
What happened to AISO.net?
It renamed to Viridio. The company states there was no buyout — the same California public benefit corporation and the same staff continue, having sold solar-powered hosting since the early 2000s.
What upstream networks does it use?
Redundant BGP peering with Hurricane Electric in Los Angeles and Crown Castle in Orange County, chosen at separate points so one metro outage cannot isolate the site, with Noction route optimisation.
