Viridio wires its solar array straight to the load instead of buying offsets, and publishes PUE 1.10 and water usage of zero litres per kWh to make the point. Cooling is closed-loop and non-water-based, with hot and cold aisle containment and set points driven by an on-site weather station; the backup generator runs on propane rather than diesel, chosen for air quality. Every server takes two supplies through an automatic transfer switch into two of four UPS units, and virtualisation runs better than thirty to one. The company, founded in 1997 and formerly AISO.net, peers with Hurricane Electric in Los Angeles and Crown Castle in Orange County, deliberately at separate points so one metro outage cannot isolate the site. The company puts avoided emissions at 34,488 lbs of CO2 a year, and it was the first data centre to join the U.S. Green Building Council as a public member. Everything else is owned end to end: the building, the network, the hypervisor and an in-house control panel in place of cPanel.
