Richmond County put its industrial park into Amazon's hands: the campus at Energy Way in Rockingham, North Carolina, covers 701.75 acres inside a roughly 800-acre site. Amazon announced it on 4 June 2025, putting the project at roughly $10 billion and at least 500 jobs. Some twenty buildings are planned at 200,000 to 225,000 sq ft apiece, with 2027 targeted for the first in service and the remainder by 2029. Next door is a Duke Energy plant, so transmission is in place, and cooling is designed for outside air roughly 93 per cent of the year.

Frequently asked questions

What stage has the Richmond County campus reached?
Land is deeded and site work has begun, with a groundbreaking reported for 30 October 2025. Nothing is finished yet; the first building is projected in service in 2027 and the rest through 2029.
How much land does Amazon hold at Energy Way Industrial Park?
701.75 acres, inside a campus reported at about 800 acres at Rockingham. Around twenty buildings of 200,000 to 225,000 sq ft are planned across it.
How will the Rockingham campus be cooled and watered?
Outside air for roughly 93 per cent of the year, with water-based cooling only in the hottest periods. The county's existing treatment plant covers peak summer demand, and Amazon is paying for pump station improvements and larger mains.
Why did Richmond County choose a data centre for the park?
It owned the land and picked the buyer, weighing advanced manufacturing and heavy industry against data centres after nearly fifty companies showed interest. More than thirty North Carolina communities have adopted moratoriums or zoning restrictions on such projects.
What did Amazon commit to the county alongside the campus?
Roughly $10 billion of investment, at least 500 high-skilled jobs and a $150,000 Richmond County Community Fund, whose first application round closed on 23 July 2025.
