Aomori Cold Climate Extreme Data Center
Iyasakadaira-1-120 Obuchi, Rokkasho, 039-3212, JP
Chilled water piped under a pile of snow does much of the cooling here. The Rokkasho site, in Kamikita-gun in Aomori Prefecture, pairs outside-air free cooling with snow-and-ice cooling and holds mechanical air conditioning in reserve rather than in use, for a design PUE below 1.2. Two modular server buildings and an office sit inside the Mutsu-Ogawara development district on base-isolated foundations, with 1,600 m2 of server-room floor across 160 racks, expandable in blocks of 80. Racks are 47U and rated to a tonne, provisioned at 6 kVA as standard over two 30 A circuits at 100 V and up to 24 kVA on 200 V single- or three-phase supply, with circuits of up to 10 Gbps offered. The building was finished on 7 December 2015 and opened for service that January. The company that built it filed for civil rehabilitation on 2 March 2020 with about 2.7bn yen of liabilities, and Aoi Mori Data Solution was incorporated on 22 July 2020 to take the site on.
