Microsoft has asked Varde Kommune for the planning instruments it needs to build on roughly 79 hectares at Kastkaervej, between the villages of Lunde and Norre Nebel in west Jutland. The applications went in on 11 December 2025 and propose three two-storey data halls, cut back from four, rising to 23 metres with up to 9 metres of rooftop plant above that. The council voted on 24 June 2026 to open the local-plan process only conditionally: Microsoft must set out by 30 September 2026 how it will engage the surrounding community, and must offer neighbours within 500 metres a buyout, cash compensation or a value guarantee. On the council's own timetable, building would begin in 2027 or 2028 and the site would run from around 2030. A second and larger Microsoft scheme is in front of the same kommune at Tinghoj on Ringkobingvej, some 150 hectares and five halls.
