MTN Centurion Data Centre

Colocation space
2,500
m²
Centurion has held an MTN data centre since 2011, and the building doubles as one of the operator's switching and transmission centres for Gauteng. It runs clear of the South African grid, taking gas, diesel and electricity in a mix that has earned MTN carbon credits. A 2,500 m² first floor was later raised above ground-floor halls that stayed in service throughout, backed by two 1,250 kVA generators and a 600 kW UPS on 30-minute batteries. Uptime Institute certified the ground floor as a constructed Tier III facility, and the ground floor with the first floor in design.

Frequently asked questions
What does MTN use the Centurion building for?
Its own traffic. The site has been a data centre since 2011 and is also one of MTN's key switching and transmission centres in Gauteng.
How is the Centurion data centre powered?
Independently of the national grid, on gas, diesel and electricity, an arrangement that has earned MTN carbon credits. The extension added two 1,250 kVA generators and a 600 kW UPS with 30 minutes of battery autonomy.
Which Uptime awards cover the Centurion site?
Tier III Certification of Constructed Facility for Ground Floor Phase 1, and Tier III Certification of Design Documents for Ground Floor Phase 1 together with the First Floor. The M&O Stamps of Approval held across MTN South Africa's estate sit on other Gauteng buildings.
How was the first floor added over a live data hall?
The 2,500 m² floor was built above ground-floor space that remained fully operational during the works, which is why the design certification covers both levels together.
Who handles enquiries about the Centurion site?
MTN Business. The building is MTN's own network asset rather than a merchant facility, so any approach goes to the operator directly.
