Two 500 MW transformers went into the Stackbo switchyard in September 2025, and they are the clearest measure of what Microsoft is doing at Valbo, because almost nothing about the buildings themselves has been made public. The campus occupies 200 hectares bought from private landowners outside Gävle. Vattenfall Eldistribution owns the network here rather than Ellevio: the municipality approved its Stackbo transformer station on 21 December 2020 over local objection, took a line concession in February 2023 covering the Microsoft server halls at Stackbo and Ersbo, and brought four 130 kV lines, two 400 kV lines and a new transmission station at Ängsberg södra into service in June 2026. Electricity is contracted under an hourly-matched renewable agreement with Vattenfall that Microsoft called a first for a hyperscale cloud region when the Swedish region went live on 16 November 2021.
