A paper mill stood here first: Google bought the Summa works at Hamina in 2009 and has since raised seven data centres on the ground, the seventh announced in 2024 and under construction. Cooling is seawater, drawn from the Bay of Finland. The campus is also the first anywhere from which Google exports waste heat - city-owned Haminan Energia takes it into a heat-pump plant that came online at the end of 2025, expected to cover about 80% of Hamina's district heating. Around 400 people work on site.
