Five data centre buildings of up to 800,000 sq ft each are planned in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, along Highway 85 south of Cheyenne, on a site of more than 1,200 acres. Laramie County commissioners approved the scheme unanimously on 6 January 2026 and dirt work has started; no vertical construction has begun. Tallgrass Energy develops it and deals directly with the end customer, a data centre operator it has not named. Power is the long pole. Tallgrass is putting about $7bn into its own generation on the site - the Cheyenne Power Hub and BFC Power, natural-gas turbines alongside fuel-cell systems - while Black Hills Energy has filed a substation CPCN, agreed in April 2026 to procure long-lead generation equipment for the customer, taken more than $200 million in refundable contributions in aid of construction, and will serve the load under Wyoming's large-load tariff. Capacity put to the county runs to 2.7 GW, up from the 1.8 GW announced in August 2025, with headroom described to 10 GW. Cooling is closed-loop, drawing about as much water a year as three households. First generation is expected in 2027 and service to the customer in early 2028.
